Should government require private businesses to provide paid sick leave to their employers? That question has been debated for more than a year in Tacoma. But now, Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland has put a proposal on the table that may come up for a vote by the city council.

On this edition of Northwest Now, we update the latest proposal, and revisit the conversation we had about paid sick leave in late 2013. “We have people in our community who work hard and pay their taxes and they enjoy this city as much as I do,” said Tacoma City Councilman Anders Ibsen. “But there’s a serious problem for a large percentage of them, consistent with national trends, about 40% of the people who work for a living here don’t have any options for earned time off despite working very hard.”
